The Myers Family History
Samuel Broomhead Ward
Samuel Broomhead Ward was the son of Joseph Ward and Ann Linfit and half-brother to Thomas Asline Ward. He was Master Cutler in 1798.
His daughter Mary Caroline Ward (by his second wife Grace Martindale) married the Reverend Charles Myers.
Mount Pleasant was built by Francis Sitwell and purchased by S.B. Ward in 1794 when he was 24 years old. After SBW it was occupied by the Tillotson family and in 1874, after a brief period as an asylum, it became the Girls Charity School. Mount Pleasant still stands and is used in part as an Adult Education and Community Centre. (See Plant Dr J. S. Distaff kin of Benjamin Plant (1742-1806) from an article in Roots and Branches, the journal of the Plant Family History Group)
SBW's property appears to have been an attractive target for less wealthy citizens of Sheffield, as evident from these posters (copies from Noel Myers).

From the Diary of Thomas Asline Ward: On Sunday, March 29, Mr Samuel Broomhead Ward was out walking in the fields, near his house, with his wife, two sons, three daughters, and a nursemaid, when they had to cross the Sheaf by a narrow wooden bridge. All the party but the nurse and little Anne Ward, between two and three years old, had got safely over, and just as these, the last to cross, were about to step off, the bridge broke, and they were precipitated into the stream, just then swollen and turbulent by reason of recent rain. The nurse was with difficulty rescued, but the child disappeared, and her body was not recovered until life was extinct.
